English as a Second Language (ESL)

NNPS offers a Language Instructional Education Program known as English as a Second Language (ESL) for over 1,600 culturally and linguistically diverse PK-12 students whose native language is one other than English.

Newport News has a diverse student population that includes students whose first language is not English. Our ESL program seeks to ensure that English Language Learners (ELLs) have meaningful access to the core curriculum. In addition, ELLs receiving Talented and Gifted services (TAG) or Special Education services are also eligible to receive ESL program services based on their registration and assessment data.
